What to Expect: Exploring the Titanic in VR
Titanic VR currently offers two main modes: a free exploration mode, where you can roam both the bow and stern sections of the shipwreck, and a story mode that weaves your exploration into a narrative. Originally released in 2018 for PC VR headsets and the first PlayStation VR, this marks the game’s debut on a standalone VR platform.
In story mode, you step into the role of a deep-sea explorer piloting a submarine down to the wreck. Your first mission: recover personal belongings from the Titanic for a wealthy descendant of a disaster victim.
The underwater controls are thoughtfully designed, letting you get fully immersed in the experience after just a short time. The sense of confinement in the submarine and the view through the porthole both add to the immersion. There’s a memorable moment when the bow of the Titanic slowly emerges from the darkness, 3,800 meters below the surface.
To explore the interior and recover artifacts, you’ll use a remote-controlled underwater robot equipped with cameras and gripper arms. After each dive, you’ll head to the lab to clean, secure, and examine the items you’ve retrieved.
While the Quest version doesn’t quite match the graphical fidelity of the PC VR release, it still delivers a convincing visual presentation. The submarine’s spotlights cut through the dark water, illuminating the wreck with dynamic shadows – a standout technical feature on Meta Quest. The underwater robot reveals floating particles, as well as fish and crabs now inhabiting the wreck site.
