Mark Zuckerberg just teased new smart glasses for 2025

Mark Zuckerberg confirmed on an earnings call that new smart glasses products are coming later this year.
According to various reports, Meta will add two new products to its smart glasses portfolio this year: Oakley-branded glasses with features similar to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, and a higher-priced product with a heads-up display.
In an earnings call where Meta executives presented the company's first-quarter 2025 financial results, Zuckerberg confirmed for the first time that new smart glasses products are planned for this year.
"We've got some exciting new launches with our partner EssilorLuxottica later this year as well that should expand that category and add some new technological capabilities to the glasses," Zuckerberg said.
Eyewear manufacturer EssilorLuxottica and Meta have been partners since 2019. In 2024, the companies extended their partnership into the next decade. EssilorLuxottica's brands include Ray-Ban and Oakley. The article image shows the current Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.
Meta's AI glasses gain traction
Mark Zuckerberg said at the investor conference that sales of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses tripled last year.
At the beginning of the year, an all-hands meeting was leaked in which Zuckerberg spoke of more than one million devices sold in 2024. The CEO of EssilorLuxottica, Francesco Milleri, gave a figure of 2 million total units sold back in February. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses were launched in October 2023.
Meta CFO Susan Li said of the product on the earnings call: "We’re seeing very strong traction with Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, with over 4x as many monthly actives as a year ago, and the number of people using voice commands is growing even faster as people use it to answer questions and control their glasses."
Reality Labs revenue declines
Reality Labs, the division that develops VR headsets and AI glasses, was in the red again last quarter, with revenues of $412 million and an operating loss of $4.2 billion.
Reality Labs' revenue has been growing steadily since the launch of Meta Quest 3 and Ray-Ban smart glasses in 2023, a trend that came to an end with the first quarter of 2025. Revenue decreased six percent year-over-year "due to lower Meta Quest sales, which were partially offset by increased sales of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses," Susan Li said during the call.
The decline in demand for the budget-friendly Meta Quest 3S so shortly after its release is not a good sign for the VR industry. On a brighter note, overall Quest usage rose by 30% year over year in 2024, and according to Li, the platform is "seeing deeper engagement as Quest 3S makes VR accessible to more people".
