PC VR survival game Bootstrap Island reveals roadmap to full release

New adventures await fans of the PC VR survival game Bootstrap Island, as revealed in a roadmap to the full release.
Bootstrap Island is a survival game inspired by Robinson Crusoe. It was developed from the ground up for PC VR.
You are the sole survivor of a 17th-century shipwreck. In order to survive on the mysterious tropical island, you must adapt to your surroundings, fend off wild animals, explore the island, and develop your skills.
Bootstrap Island entered Early Access in early 2024. Since then, three major updates have been released, introducing an inventory and system for building shelters and managing scarce resources, a boss fight against the Jungle Overlord, and a dynamic weather system.
Now, indie studio Maru VR has unveiled the official roadmap for Bootstrap Island (see trailer below). It lays out the studio’s vision for the game from its initial state to the planned end of Early Access in the first quarter of 2026.
Upcoming major updates
The fourth major update, "Riverlands," will be released this summer and will expand the island with a new region carved by rivers. The waters are home to dangers such as gavials, electric eels, and strong currents, requiring new strategies. The update will also add new resources, including a tropical fruit, and introduce the musket sling, expanding long-range survival tools.
The fourth major update, "Riverlands," will be released this summer, expanding the island with a new region shaped by winding rivers. These waters are home to dangers such as gavials, electric eels, and strong currents, demanding new survival strategies. The update will also introduce new resources, including a tropical fruit, and add the musket sling, further enhancing long-range survival options.
The fifth major update, "Visions," focuses on the psychological toll of the survival experience. After enduring a violent storm, the protagonist falls ill and begins to suffer from hallucinations and vivid visions. New medicinal plants will help players manage the illness and its surreal symptoms. This update also introduces quicksand as a new environmental hazard and adds a tutorial to help new players get familiar with the game’s core systems.
In the full release version, the island’s deepest secrets will be revealed. With the arrival of native inhabitants, complex social dynamics and a new storyline will unfold. Communication with the natives is non-verbal, relying on body language and gestures, and relationships can evolve into either alliances or conflicts. Unique tribal artifacts will introduce new dimensions of survival, culture, and history to the game.
Bootstrap Island is available on Steam and is currently 30% off until May 25.
